Reunited and it feels so good!

Zu Studios, Lewes

After another wonderful and crazy trip throughout Europe we finally touched down on English soil once again and enjoyed a fabulous home coming in Brighton for the festive season.

It was great to discover Zu Studios and hope dearly that the space will survive the current changes taking place. Places like this are torches in dark and we should do everything we can to support such spaces staying alive.

Brighton brought forth a brilliant run of Richard II scratch nights, which are steadily growing in strength and the full play will be ready to premier at the Brighton Festival in May.

After a cheery Christmas and New Year we fell into the arms of London town and enjoyed a fabulous week at the ever supportive Rag Factory off Brick Lane. Another great run of Richard ensued and busy workshops. Plus a warm return to the Hub in Angel, where Lucy Baker, an ex-fool, hosted a fantastic evening showcasing the new Comedie de Tragik Scenario Scratches that this year’s Academy of Fools have been working on and also a hilarious performance by Jonathan Kay to top it all off. A great night was had by all and the impromptu fireworks in the street bellow could not have been better times… “Here comes Gerald the Giant!” - BANG!

Next we are off to a cosy week of work in the magical town of Glastonbury. We are all really looking forward to returning to this nest of archetypal wonder. We highly recommend anyone thinking of travelling to a workshop for a special weekend to head for these two. The air in Glastonbury is full of the stuff of dreams and the work here always reaches parts much further down the road less travelled. We then head up north to Birmingham in March and Liverpool for April. Mightily looking forward to catching up with all our dear friends up there!

Finding a drafty church hall or a high-priced studio isn't hard. Finding a community is a little harder. We're developing a space where people from the entire creative fabric of London can come to work, train, rehearse & meet... & ultimately work together to create projects that are significantly more than the sum of their parts. A space where people support each other. A space where you never know who you'll meet, you never know what idea you'll form or where it will take you. And the fabric? Think of it more as a trampoline than just a parachute.

Other Info
The workshops introduce you to the structure of Jonathan Kay's unique Fooling Technique over the course of a weekend. This is only enough time to give you a taste of the structure, with the Nomadic Academy being the only way to fully digest the full experience of working in this way, but a weekend workshop is still an adventure unto itself. Over the last 37 years Jonathan has developed his unique artistic practice of Fooling. A master of his art, Jonathan Kay is an incredibly generous and insightful teacher, creating a space where it is safe for the participants to lower their defences and explore the infinite possibilities of a world without boundaries. This work is not for the faint hearted, but it is revelatory and invigorating for anyone who dares to wander down the path of the Fool. You do not have to be a performer to get a lot out of this work. Jonathan Kay works with many types of people from all walks of life, from Mental Health Nurses, The Ministry of Defence, Choirs and annual workshops in Bosnia. His work helps people free up their minds, find inspiration and make powerful choices surrounding their lives.

'Stupid, silly, intriguing, delightful, strange and unsettling… I really learned something about the nature of performance. Especially about the unconscious "audience" that one carries around with one almost all the time.'
Guy Dartnel

Jonathan Kay and Nomadic Academy of Fools present
A Feast of Fools!
Payment by donation. See donations page on website for details.

An evening of foolish entertainments brought to you by Jonathan Kay and the Nomadic Academy of Fools. As part of the Academy training the participants are working on a new theatre pratice called C.D.T. (Comedy de Tragic) where the fools learn to work together on sequences with a variety of developed characters. There are a great many combinations of sequences and characters, so no two shows are ever the same! This is a scratch performance, which is a style of performance where the artists are presenting work in progress rather than a fully realised polished piece. So please be generous and your feedback will be very welcome.

After the Fools have performed Jonathan Kay will also perform his legendery show Know One's Fool. Jonathan Kay is a 21st Century Jester, for a generation bought up on passive forms of entertainment. Over the last 35 years Jonathan has developed a unique artistic practice, which he calls Fooling. There is something timeless about his work. It will feel familiar and yet like nothing you have ever experienced before. A master of his art, Jonathan Kay is an incredibly generous and insightful performer, creating a space where it is safe for the audience to lower their defences and explore the infinite possibilities of a world without boundaries. His shows are not only hilariously funny but they are also revelatory and invigorating. He leads you down the path of the Fool, where you will free up your minds, find inspiration and see that anything is possible. The audience actually creates the show, using Jonathan Kay as their easel!
